Fire Safety Fundamentals

Essential knowledge every household should have

Early Detection

Install smoke detectors and fire alarms in key areas of your home. Check batteries regularly and test alarms monthly to ensure proper functioning.

  • Install on every level of your home
  • Place near bedrooms and kitchen areas
  • Test monthly and replace batteries annually
  • Replace entire unit every 10 years
  • Keep detectors clean and dust-free

Escape Planning

Create and practice a fire escape plan with your family. Identify two exits from each room and establish a meeting point outside.

  • Draw a floor plan with all escape routes
  • Practice escape routes in the dark
  • Designate an outdoor meeting place
  • Practice the plan twice a year
  • Ensure windows and doors open easily

Fire Extinguishers

Keep appropriate fire extinguishers in your home and learn how to use them properly. Remember the PASS technique.

PASS Technique:
  • Pull the pin
  • Aim at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the handle
  • Sweep from side to side

Electrical Safety

Regularly inspect electrical cords and outlets. Avoid overloading circuits and replace damaged wiring immediately.

  • Check cords for fraying or damage
  • Don't overload electrical outlets
  • Use surge protectors properly
  • Have electrical work done by professionals
  • Replace old or damaged appliances

What to Do During a Fire Emergency

Step-by-step emergency response procedures

1. Alert Everyone

Shout "FIRE!" to alert everyone in the building. Activate the fire alarm if available.

2. Get Out Fast

Leave immediately using your planned escape route. Don't stop to gather belongings.

3. Stay Low

Crawl under smoke to avoid inhaling toxic gases. Smoke rises, so cleaner air is near the floor.

4. Test Doors

Feel doors with the back of your hand before opening. If hot, use alternate escape route.

5. Call for Help

Once outside, call 911 or local fire department. Never go back inside for any reason.

6. Meet at Rally Point

Go to your designated meeting place and account for all family members.
