Important LPG Safety Facts

Essential knowledge about LPG properties and safety

LPG Safety Information

Did You Know?

LPG is odorless in its natural state. A chemical compound called Ethyl mercaptan is added during production to give the gas a distinctive smell, making it easy to detect leaks.

For any gas leaks, call your dealer immediately.

Essential Gas Safety Guidelines

Follow these OSH (Occupational Safety and Health) guidelines for safe LPG usage

OSH Guidelines for LPG Safety

1. Know Your Gas Shut-off Valve

Learn the location of your gas shut-off valve and how to operate it in case of emergency. Every household member should know where it is and how to turn it off quickly.

  • Locate the main gas shut-off valve
  • Practice turning it off (clockwise)
  • Keep a wrench nearby for emergencies
  • Teach all family members the procedure

2. Proper Storage

Store cylinders in an upright position externally in a secure, well-ventilated area away from heat sources and ignition points.

  • Always store cylinders upright
  • Keep in well-ventilated outdoor areas
  • Away from heat sources and direct sunlight
  • Secure to prevent falling or rolling

3. Keep Areas Clear

Maintain storage areas free of combustible materials and ensure proper ventilation to prevent gas accumulation.

  • Remove flammable materials from storage area
  • Ensure adequate ventilation
  • Keep area clean and organized
  • No smoking or open flames nearby

4. Safety Equipment

Provide and maintain suitable firefighting equipment near gas storage areas and ensure it's easily accessible.

  • Install appropriate fire extinguishers
  • Regular maintenance of safety equipment
  • Easy access during emergencies
  • Train family members on usage

5. Ensure Ventilation

Rooms where LPG appliances are used must have adequate ventilation to prevent gas accumulation and ensure safe operation.

  • Install proper ventilation systems
  • Keep vents unobstructed
  • Regular ventilation maintenance
  • Natural airflow when possible

6. Turn Off Daily

Turn off cylinder valves at the end of each working day to prevent potential leaks during non-use periods.

  • Close cylinder valve after use
  • Turn off appliance controls
  • Make it a daily routine
  • Check connections before closing

Safe Methods for Gas Cooking

Essential practices for safe LPG cooking in your kitchen

Safe LPG Cooking Methods

1. Check Equipment

Regularly inspect regulators and hoses for damage, wear, or leaks. Use SIRIM-approved equipment only.

2. Maintain Distance

Keep a safe distance of at least 1 to 1.5 meters between the gas burner/stove and the LPG cylinder.

3. Proper Storage

Store LPG cylinders in well-ventilated areas away from heat sources. The gas burner should be placed higher than the cylinder.

4. Gas Leak Detection

An unusual odor may indicate a gas leak. Extinguish any flames and DO NOT turn on the burner/stove if you suspect a leak.

5. Find Leaks

Use soapy water to check for leaks - if there are bubbles, remove the gas regulator and move the LPG cylinder to an area with adequate ventilation.

6. Light Up Safely

When using a lighter, ignite the flame BEFORE turning on the gas burner/stove to prevent gas accumulation.

7. Cooking Safety

DO NOT leave the gas burner/stove unattended while cooking to prevent accidents and ensure safe operation.

8. Turn Off

Switch off the gas burner/stove and gas regulator when not in use to prevent potential leaks and ensure safety.

Gas Leak Emergency Response

What to do when you detect a gas leak

Gas Leak Emergency Response Guide

How Gas Leaks Occur

  • Defective rubber tubing
  • Faulty regulator fitting
  • Poor handling of gas appliances
  • Unattended cooking

Associated Risks

Gas inhalation leads to suffocation
Fire accident due to explosion

Emergency Steps to Take

Extinguish all flames, incense sticks, etc.

Close the regulator & put safety lid on cylinder

Don't light a match or lighter

Don't switch on/off electrical switches

Open doors and windows to ventilate

Call gas supplier or fire department

First Aid for Gas Exposure

Move the person to fresh air and let them rest comfortably. If necessary, administer artificial respiration. For eye contact: rinse immediately with water for 20+ minutes, remove contact lenses if present, continue rinsing and seek medical help.
